Linguacuisine Workshop 5 Video Editing Linguacuisine Workshop 5

iMovie We will be using iMovie to make some videos! iPad built in movie editor Basic time-line clip management Extra functions like transitions, channels (audio and video), filters etc. Open iMovie on the iPad.

iMovie Interface

Media Palette Source media that can be included in your movie Moments (animations of photos), Video, Photos etc. Audio tracks. To include in your movie, tap a media item and it will be included in the timeline. Try adding a few items to the timeline.

Video Editing – Timeline 1: Adding Media The timeline shows the sequence of clips / edits. It’s where most of the editing process takes place. Clips can be put onto the timeline (by clicking from the palette), and rearranged (by dragging). Rearrange clips on your timeline by dragging them around.

Video Editing – Timeline 2: Transitions In-between your clips, you can include transitions. Pressing the transitions icon (the square between 2 clips) brings up the transitions menu on the bottom. You can choose the type of transition and the duration (including “None”) Set some transitions between your media clips.

Video Editing – Timeline 3: Clips Selecting (by tapping) a clip on the timeline gives further options. These include setting the length (by dragging the sides in or out) – images and moments only Setting the speed – video (and audio) only Setting Volume - video (and audio) only Adding Titles and Filters Splitting- video (and audio) only (Splits occur at the timeline centre line) Duplicating Change the length of some of your clips, add a filter and double speed. Advanced: Split a video clip into 2 clips and insert a new clip in between.

Video Editing – Timeline 4: Audio Audio can be added as a separate channel Choose an audio clip from the palette. It will be added as a green bar along the bottom, and can be dragged around and manipulated like other clips. Selecting an audio clip also allows a fade to be set using arrows on the clip. Video audio can be separated from the video and manipulated also (or muted if needed) Choose some background music from the themes section in the audio page of the palette. Make it fade in and out. Mute the audio from your video clips.

Review Storyboards (~10 minutes) What shots will you need for your video?

Documents App – An easier way to download Safari is not great for downloading files. The Documents app has a built in browser that allows downloads easier. Select “Browser” from side menu, navigate as normal. When downloading a file: Set filename Choose video type Choose destination (choose iCloud so file can be used in iMovie)

Curate Video Clips (~ 25 minutes) Film makers often use placeholder shots while producing a video (that sometimes end up in the final movie!). Find an approximate set of videos from online clips. E.g. https://www.videezy.com/ https://pixabay.com/videos/ And audio: http://www.freemusicpublicdomain.com/

Preview & Final Video At any time you can check your video in the Preview window by pressing play on the timeline. When you are happy, press the “Done” button in the top left of the screen. This will show the final movie (you can change the title here or go back to edit) Pressing the share button allows you to save the video in various ways, e.g. share on facebook / youtube etc., save to iCloud drive… When you save, you will get more options about the size and quality of the video. Medium (360p) or Large (540p) should be fine for most videos. Save your video at medium settings.

Make an Edit! (~25 Minutes) Use your clips to make a place-holder version of your recipe.

Recipe Storyboard Brief Reminder We will be taking the storyboard into the next session… Make storyboard for a ~1 min film of a recipe Language neutral (no dialogue!) Footage should be of preparation and cooking (i.e. not shopping) Choose something filmable in a normal kitchen (no stuntmen or CGI allowed)
