Topography

Definition Study of Earth’s surface features. Focuses on the crust layer. Shows elevation: height of a surface feature. 452 Feet Above Sea Level

Topographic Maps A drawing of the Earth’s surface (3D) on a flat piece of paper. Shows elevation by using contour lines Contour lines: connect all points at the same elevation.

SAME THING!

Contour Interval Difference in elevation between adjacent (next to) contour lines. If intervals are close together  means a steep hill/cliff. If far apart  gentle rise

Rules Contour lines never cross. The closer contour lines  steeper the slope.

Rules Every 5th contour line is marked darker on a map, and elevation is marked with numbers.
