Geb’s Family Grandfather Atum (self-created creator god) Father Shu (God of air) Mother Tefnut (Goddess of moisture) Sister-wife Nut (Goddess of Sky) Children: Osiris, Isis, Seth, and Nephthys

Who is Geb? God of Earth (most cultures have female earth gods) Earthquakes his laughter God of mines and caves - provides minerals and precious stones Associated with vegetation and lush farming of Nile God of Harvest (sometimes considered married to Renenutet) Ennead of Heliopolis (Second generation of group of nine gods) Sometimes considered to be bisexual Third divine pharaoh ruled after Shu before Osiris Supported Horus ruling after Osiris not Seth and made Horus ruler of the living

How Geb is Depicted Portrayed with barley growing on ribs and green with vegetation all over body Combination of white crown and Atef crown Sometimes a goose (his sacred animal) Depicted as body of man and head can be either goose or snake As the Earth, he is often seen lying beneath the sky goddess Nut, leaning on one elbow, with one knee bent toward the sky, (echoing the shape of two mountains and a valley).

Evolution of Geb Pre-dynastic period Originated around Heliopolis and is centre of his worship Worshiped as a goose, his sacred animal Pharaohs claim to be descendents of Geb

Geb and Death Authority of all tombs buried in earth Assists of ritual of weighing of the heart The heavy hearts are trapped in the earth by Geb Geb will release souls if they are light Light hearts go to the sky with Nut Nut depicted on the outside of sarcophagus, Geb in base (protected by both deities)

Creation Myth Nut and Geb were locked in a perpetual embrace, angering their grandfather the sun god Ra Separated by Shu who lifted Nut up to create the atmosphere by separating Sky (Nut) and Earth (Geb) Nut was pregnant and gave birth to Osiris, Isis, Set, and Nephthys Geb still longed for his sister, and was often depicted lying prone with his erect phallus pointing towards her body. He wept when he was separated from her, and so created the oceans of the world. Geb became infatuated with his mother and when his father Shu was away weakened by battle, he sought his mother and raped her This was followed by nine days of darkness and storms Geb went to his father’s palace and reached out to the cobra on the crown of Re The cobra read his guilt and killed all his companions Geb was severely wounded, but a lock of Ra’s hair saved Geb He became a good pharaoh that protected his land and people
