Changes in Matter

Do now: Given an apple how can you change it?

Matter can undergo changes in three ways. Physical change Chemical change Nuclear change

Physical Change Matter is not altered in its composition and its properties can be identified. Only the physical state is altered. For example: May involve energy. Examples:

Chemical change Matter is changed into a new substance having different properties than the original substance. Examples: Always involve energy. When heat is absorbed they are _________ reaction. When heat is released they are ____________.

Nuclear Change Matter is changed into a new substance due to changes in atomic structure. Examples: A tremendous amount of energy is released.

Can Matter Be Created nor DESTROYED? Law of Conservation of Matter and Energy states that matter and energy can neither be created nor destroyed however they may be changed from one form into another. Equation: Means:

Activity: Make a table with three headings: Physical Change Chemical Nuclear
