Tenure and Promotion: Article 6 By: M. Star Mahara – TRUFA Vice-President and TRUFA Observer on DFSTPC’s June 2, 2017

Article 6 – Be Sure to Read it 6.1 Preamble Tenure: the recognition by academic peers and the University that Faculty Members have demonstrated through their academic achievements and contributions that they have sufficient momentum and promise of ongoing success to justify the long-term commitment of the University to ongoing appointment. Promotion: recognition of the Faculty Member's growth and development in his/her profession, and as a Scholar, and of his/her service to the University and the academic community.

Principles and Essential Features of Standards Documents (Oct 2007) Achieving tenure and promotion through the ranks is based on incremental and accumulative growth of a faculty member Encourage faculty members to create a portfolio that describes activities, achievements, and future plans The significance of the work should determine whether a candidate merits T or P, not merely a particular number of [contributions] Senior/Associate/II – must be recognized and assessed at national level; Principal/Full/II at international level Principles to guide in the development of Standards documents

6.11.6 - Tenure Tenure shall be granted when there is consistent evidence of meeting the required academic performance standard, demonstrated professional growth, and the promise of future development. The criteria for tenure…. (a) Satisfactory record as a Teacher or in Professional Role, as measured against standards approved by Senate; (b) Satisfactory record of Scholarship, as measured against standards approved by Senate; (c) Satisfactory record of Service, as measured against standards approved by Senate.

6.3 - Progression to Promotion in Rank Promotion shall be based on accomplishments beyond those required for the granting of tenure. All promotions shall demonstrate incremental and cumulative progress. Promotion shall be based on accomplishments beyond the Faculty Member’s present rank in line with Article 6.11.7, and the applicable discipline-specific tenure and promotion standards for the relevant rank.

6.11 – Criteria for Rank, Tenure and Promotion 6.11.5 Definition's of teaching, professional roles, scholarship, service 6.11.7 what is required for rank Assistant/Lecturer/I: evidence of “potential” Associate/Senior/ II: evidence of “exceeding” the required performance standard /”consistent” accomplishment/contribution Full/Principal/III: “outstanding”, “sustained” success

Ensure: your CV is current and neatly formatted you have three APARS (past three years) names and information of at least six potential external reviewers: follow the 6.4.2 exactly with respect to the information you provide to the DFSTPC so committee members are able to determine if a reviewer is “suitably qualified … capable of making an assessment”, and arms length, and nature of relationship with you potential externals should be from an institution with a tenure/rank system (e.g., VIU does not)

Article 6 – Appendix 1 Guidance for evidence that teaching meets/exceeds standards Include a range of evidence – and make the link between the evidence and your claim that you have achieved a standard (c) Mandatory components: note these carefully – especially a minimum of three sets of course evaluations and three sets of peer observation data – a range of courses, if applicable, within the 3 year period preceding Evidence of reflective scholarly teaching is important – what did you do with feedback you obtained?

Other 6.5.2.1 – you are informed of who is on our DFSTPC – right to object Be careful you do not include something in your portfolio that may exclude a colleague from serving on your committee 6.5.3 DFSTPC may choose one external not on your list
