Learning Target I can describe the structure of an analytical mini- essay. I can describe the details the author used to make a claim about the elements of a myth.

Moving On… S L A N T

Analyzing a Model Mini-Essay For your mid-unit assessment you will be writing a “mini” essay with a very short introduction and conclusion and two body paragraphs. Through that process, you will begin to learn about writing essays in general. Think-Pair-Share: “Why do you need to be able to describe the structure of an analytical essay? When might you need to do that?”

Model Analytical Mini-Essay: Elements of Mythology and Theme of Cronus Turn to page 71. This is an example that is about the myth of Cronus. For the mid-unit assessment, you will write your own analytical mini- essay. However, you will not be writing about Cronus for your own essay. First we are going to read the essay just to think about the content: what the writer is telling the reader. Read along silently as it is read aloud.

Model Analytical Mini-Essay: Elements of Mythology and Theme of Cronus Think-Pair-Share: * “What is this text about? What is the author trying to tell us?” Now focus on the first sentence, the introduction. * “What is the main idea the author is trying to tell you in this very first sentence?”

Model Analytical Mini-Essay: Elements of Mythology and Theme of Cronus Label the four paragraphs: Introduction Body Paragraph 1 Body Paragraph 2 Conclusion We will reread the essay to think about how it is structured: How did the author put his/her ideas together to make it clear for the reader? Look at Body Paragraph 1. Notice: “What does the first body paragraph include? How is it structured?” Create a new Structure of Model Analytical Mini-Essay anchor chart with students.

Moving On… S L A N T

How This Author Might Have Planned the Analytical Mini-Essay Page 72. See the Elements of Myth graphic organizer (for Body P1) Detail from the Cronus myth My thinking about this detail… What do you think the completed model graphic organizer looked like before the author wrote the first body paragraph?”

Elements of Myth graphic organizer (for Body P1) Elbow Partner Work: Reread the first body paragraph, and work backward to fill in the graphic organizer about elements of mythology. This is a tool the author would have used when planning his/her essay You can simply jot notes and do not need to write full sentences.

Page 73. This G. O. goes with Body P2 Page 73. This G. O. goes with Body P2. Partners, work backwards to complete it also.

Closing: Feedback Comparing Our Graphic Organizers to the Author’s (5 minutes) Think-Pair-Share: * “Are there any obvious differences between your organizer and the organizer filled out by the author? Why do you think that might be? * “How could you revise your organizer to improve it?”
