A few Facts Less than 20% of African households have access to financial services Less than 30% of bank lending in Africa goes to the private sector vs. 60% in South Asia Banking is very expensive despite increasing competition Capital Markets are underdeveloped Challenges Throughout Africa, dynamic and efficient financial sectors can play a major role in increasing private investment, creating jobs, and raising incomes, thereby providing opportunities for people to improve their lives and finances. Expand sustainable access to financial services Increase financial depth, diversity and efficiency Strengthen institutional and regulatory capacity

Mission Bring together African governments, development partners and the private sector to unleash the potential of African financial sectors Leverage close links within AfDB to jointly drive financial sector reforms.

Work & Activities Improve coordination of Financial Sector Development (FSD) activities among donors Improve access to information and knowledge sharing on FSD issues Promote country and region-led FSD projects Build FSD awareness

Examples of recent achievements Coordinated joint AU/MFW4A policy document on Microfinance «Advancing the African Microfinance Sector» Coordinated second MFW4A Book, “Financing Africa”, to be researched and written jointly by AfDB, GTZ and World Bank Coordinated regular thematic Donor Working Groups Compiled database of more than 600 financial sector projects (including 48 by OSGE and 50 by OPSM) 1- Advancing the African Microfinance Sector endorsed by Council of MoF 12/09, presented to Heads of State AU (02/01) 2- The MFW4A Secretariat convened and coordinated final discussions between the lead authors on the MFW4A Book II project. Joint research missions began in march with missions to Senegal and Nigeria. 3- WG coordinated by MFW4A are : Access to Finance, Remittances, Agricultural and Rural Finance, RFI

Strengthening ties within the bank Identify counterparts in the bank to promote a cross-cutting approach to financial sector development MFW4A to participate in regular meetings of relevant departments/division Include relevant departments in thematic quarterly calls - Identify counterparts in OSGE - Coming together around projects to promote financial sector development and a business enabling environment and on country levels - MFW4A to participate in weekly meetings of OSGE - Participation of OSGE in quarterly calls - Enhance interaction with EDRE and OPSM - MFW4A participates as observer in MFWG
