unit 1: Preview and 1.1 Activity

Visual Prompt 1. You may have heard the saying “A picture is worth a thousand words.” What story does this picture tell? Why? 2. What do you predict you will learn in this unit? Think-Pair-Share

Unit Overview As we read, mark the text by highlighting or underlining words and phrases that help you predict what the unit will be about. This unit focuses on “choices,” using a variety of genres to investigate this theme. You will examine texts that present characters who, for personal cultural reasons, have made choices about the way they live their lives. You will analyze fiction and nonfiction texts and create and present original works that express the concept of choice. In creating these original texts, you will engage in the writing process, including collaborating with your peers in writing groups. Think-Pair-Share

Activity 1.1 Previewing the Unit

Learning Target I can preview the big ideas and vocabulary for the unit. QHT Unit Goals I can identify and summarize the knowledge and skills necessary to complete the Embedded Assessment 1 successfully. Unpacking EA 1

Effect When we talk about the effect of changes we are referring to the way one thing acts upon another. So we are asking you to be able to describe how one thing influences another. Effective refers to something that is successful in producing a desired or intended result.

Making Connections As we read the “Making Connections” paragraph and highlight any unknown words. In this unit, you will read a variety of genres, including poetry, autobiography, memoir, myth, and fable. You will also learn more about personal narratives and will write and revise on of your own. By the end of the unit, after studying myths and fables, you will also write a myth. Before starting the unit, answer the essential questions below:

1. How do authors use narrative elements to create a story?
