Types of energy & Energy Transformation

7 different types Mechanical Electrical Light Thermal Sound Chemical Nuclear

Mechanical Energy The energy of movement. Mechanical energy includes both kinetic AND potential energy.

Electrical Energy A form of energy that is produced when electrons move from place to place.

Light Energy A form of energy that travels in waves and can move through empty space where there is no air.

Thermal Energy The energy of moving particles in a substance; also called heat energy.

A from of energy produced by vibrations between objects Sound Energy A from of energy produced by vibrations between objects

The energy that is stored in bonds of chemical compounds. Chemical energy The energy that is stored in bonds of chemical compounds. Some bonds have more energy than others

Nuclear energy The energy in the nucleus of an atom. 2 types Nuclear Fusion-Combining two or more smaller atoms to form a larger atom Nuclear Fission-Breaking down a larger atom into two smaller atoms.

Law of Conservation of Energy Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred. A change from one type of energy to another is called an energy transformation.

Example A toaster transforms electrical energy into thermal energy to toast your bread. Your body transforms chemical energy (from food) into mechanical energy to walk/move.
