Background Information On December 2, 2015 Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik committed a terrorist attack in San Bernardo in the form of a mass shooting. The two committed suicide after the attack. The FBI wants access to information in the couple’s iPhone to determine if there are possible coconspirators or leads to other individuals involved in more terrorist activities. The FBI has requested Apple create a way to crack into an iPhone without risking the destruction of information. Apple has refused to comply with the FBI, citing the danger in creating a hack which would allow the government and other individuals access to personal information of all citizens.

The Situation Cracking the Code iPhones use a six digit pass code, incorporating letters (lower and upper case), numbers and symbols. There are _________ possible combinations of codes. With only 10 tries, calculate are the odds that they will crack the code?

A Possible Solution? Congressman Darrell Issa has suggested that the iPhone be cloned to provide multiple opportunities to crack the code. How many clones would need to be made to ensure the code could be cracked?

Critical Questions What ethical issues are raised by creating a way to crack a pass code on an iPhone? What ideas around justice are posed by creating or not creating a method to crack the pass code? How long might it take to try all of the possible combinations of pass codes?

Construct a Viable Argument Choose a side, should the Apple be compelled to create a way crack into a pass code locked iPhone? Create a viable argument that explores the ethical implications of both sides of the issue.  Use the calculations you did to argue your position.
