Unit 3: Matter in Ecosystems Title Page Pg. 77 1. Write the topic for the unit in the middle of the paper and box it in. 2. Divide the paper into 3 equal sections. 3. Write one element name per section 4. Copy the square from the periodic table for each element. For each, label 1)atomic number 2)atomic mass and 3)chemical symbol 4) element name 5. Each section must have 3 different colors(black and white don’t count). Don’t use the same 3 colors for 2 different sections. Carbon Pg. 77 Unit 3: Matter in Ecosystems Hydrogen Oxygen

Title: Matter in Living Things Cornell Notes-Pg 79 100pts

What is Matter? Matter is anything that has mass and volume. Atoms are the smallest part of matter. Elements consist of atoms of one kind.

What is Bonding? Individual atoms will join together and form connections. Chemical bonds –energy connections that hold together atoms. Atoms of the same element may bond together. Or atoms of 2 or more different elements bond together to form a compound

How is matter grouped in living things? Most elements are grouped together into molecules(the smallest unit of a compound that has the characteristics of that compound)

Molecules may be? Small Or Very large

What is Organic Chemistry the study of? The study of carbon containing compounds. Most abundant element in living matter. The most common elements in living things are C,H,O,N.

Carbon forms a variety of compounds. Has only four electrons (e-) in the outer shell. Carbon is not happy ! Easily forms four strong bonds with….. Other elements Itself

Carbon can form long chains that are? Branched Straight Carbon also forms rings….. Ring-shaped

What are Hydrocarbons? Simplest organic molecules. Compounds made up of only H and C. Major component of fossil fuels

Thru 1 Carbon cycle worksheet Pg. 78 1. Fill in blanks from words provided 2. color worksheet 3. Then staple tape or glue into page 78.

Summary Don’t forget 5 sentences in green.

Do it again Pg. 76 Pick a structural formula from your notes and draw it out. You must show all carbon, hydrogen and oxygen molecules and how they are attached to each other.

Out What does the chemical formula tell us about a compound? Fe2SO4 SiO2 H2O C6H1206
