INTRODUCTIONS Please share the following: Your Name Institution Functional area What does Disability inclusion mean to you? How does this look like at your institution? BOTH (About 5 minutes)

DEFINING DISABILITY Merriam-Webster definition: damages or limits a person's physical or mental abilities unable to do things in the normal way a disqualification, restriction, or disadvantage ADA definition An individual with a disability is a person who: has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities; OR has a record of such an impairment; OR is regarded as having such an impairment. MARTHA FIRST THOUGHT WHEN YOU HEAR DISABILITY, THE HANDICAP SIGN? WHEELCHAIR? - broader definition Not a negative connotation ADA doesn’t list disability types so it includes invisible disabilities (every one is different)

MY BODY DOESN'T OPPRESS ME, SOCIETY DOES SYSTEMS OF ABLEISM MY BODY DOESN'T OPPRESS ME, SOCIETY DOES As a society, we continue to design environments that exclude people with disabilities or limit their participation, leading to oppression, segregation, and negative identity (Journal of Postsecondary Education and Disability) GERRY (5.08) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7r0MiGWQY2g&feature=youtu.be

SOCIAL MODEL OF DISABILITY Disability is a social limitation that is not a result of the state of the body, but a lack of fit between the body and the environment Society perpetuates disability Disability is a salient identity GERRY

STRATEGIES TO CREATE A MORE INCLUSIVE CAMPUS Challenge normative assumptions Center the experiences of people with disabilities Celebrate disability identity Create a culture of access and inclusion Analyze problematic frameworks to student success/support MARTHA Support people with disabilities who may not need or request accommodations Recognize the multi-faceted nature of disability Treat disability as a campus-wide responsibility Foster disability culture - LANGUAGE Collaboration is the cornerstone for accessible and inclusive strategies to promote student success. When you are examine your environments, decisions, policies, perspectives, budgets, space allocations, campus climates, think about all populations. (inclusion)

ACCESS & INCLUSION IN FLORIDA FIU Accessible Tours at the Frost Art Museum Fully accessible computer labs/study rooms around campus Collaborative Programming – Liaison Roles Interdepartmental Accessibility efforts UF Cypress Hall Adaptive Yoga Access Abroad: Globalizing Disability Perspectives CS3LD- NSF Grant

UNIVERSAL DESIGN PRINCIPLES The message is the same: if it works well for people across the spectrum of functional ability, it works better for everyone. Provide multiple means of engagement Provide multiple means of action and expression Provide multiple means of representation GERRY 1ST PART MARTHA 2ND PART - like the social justice lens, allows to view student success as emerging from a multitude of perspectives, diverse ways of being and thinking. This guiding principle for decision making dramatically expands the conversation. Allows for flexible approaches that can be customized and adjusted for individual needs. - Offices and teaching consoles (classrooms) Music FIU ONLINE (captioning)

WHAT ARE SOME IDEAS YOU HAVE TO FOSTER AN ACCESSIBLE & INCLUSVE EXPERIENCE FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES AT YOUR INSTITUTION? MARTHA
