Standard: I.E. 1a CN-Microscope 08/27/13 Objective Students will be able to identify the parts of a compound microscope.

What are the different types of microscopes? 1. Simple Microscope – one lens Ex – Magnifying lens 2. Compound Microscope – 2 lenses that magnify each other. 3. Dissecting Microscope – no special slide preparation What are the different types of microscopes?

Microscopes

Parts of The Compound Microscope

Used to look through and contains the Ocular lens. Eyepiece: Used to look through and contains the Ocular lens. Magnifies the image by 10X

Used to rotate objective lenses to increase or decrease magnification Nose piece:

Arm: Used to support the microscope when carried

Objective lenses (3types): Used to Enlarge the Image Magnification ranges from Low (4x) Medium (10x) High (40x)

TOTAL MAGNIFICATION Power of the eyepiece (10X) multiplied by objective lenses determines total magnification. To figure out how much total magnification you can see, use multiplication. Objective Lenses: 4X, 10X, & 40X The “x” next to the number means how many “times” it is magnified. (For example: 40x reads as “forty times” which means that the image you are looking at is 40 times bigger then in real life.)

Magnification Objective Ocular Eyepiece Total Magnification Low Power 4 x 10 x 40 x Medium Power 100 x High Power 400 x

Platform that supports a slide being view Stage: Stage Clip Platform that supports a slide being view Hold slide in place

Move stage up and down for FOCUSING the image Moves the stage slightly to SHARPEN the image Coarse adjustment knob: Fine adjustment knob:

controls the amount of light passing through the slide Diaphragm:

Light source Base: Provide light for viewing Supports the microscope

Used to move the lenses closer to or farther from the slide Body tube: Used to move the lenses closer to or farther from the slide
