Counting from 0 to 199 (it’s easier than you think!) Los Números en Español Counting from 0 to 199 (it’s easier than you think!)

Let’s see what you remember… How high can you count en español? Take a moment to write 0-15 down the margin of your paper and write the Spanish names of as many as you can. Remember to spell the words the way they SOUND using Spanish letter sounds.

The numbers 0-15 are their own unique words… Zero Cero One Uno Two Dos Three Tres Four Cuatro Five Cinco Six Seis Seven Siete Eight Ocho Nine Nueve Ten Diez Eleven Once Twelve Doce Thirteen Trece Fourteen Catorce Fifteen Quince The numbers 0-15 are their own unique words… How did you do?

Notice the spelling changes! 16-19 16 Dieciséis 17 Diecisiete 18 Dieciocho 19 Diecinueve These numbers are formed kind of like writing a math problem. Squish your tens and ones together, adding the spanish word for “and” in the middle 10 and 6 Diez y Seis becomes Dieciséis We are writing the number as “ten and six” in one long word diez y becomes dieci The Z changes to a C and y (meaning and) changes to an i Notice the spelling changes!

Counting from 21-29 is similar to the structure of the numbers 16-19 Veintiuno 22 Veintidós 23 Veintitrés 24 Veinticuatro 25 Veinticinco 26 Veintiséis 27 Veintisiete 28 Veintiocho 29 veintinueve 20 Veinte Counting from 21-29 is similar to the structure of the numbers 16-19 20 and 1 Veinte y uno veintiuno When adding ones, change veinte to veinti

30 Treinta Tens y ones 31 Treinta y uno 32 Treinta y dos 33 Treinta y tres 34 Treinta y cuatro 35 Treinta y cinco 36 Treinta y seis 37 Treinta y siete 38 Treinta y ocho 39 Treinta y nueve 30 Treinta From this point forward, no more squishing! Ones are added by following the simple formula Tens y ones No spelling changes needed! 31 = treinta y uno Remember, Y means AND!

Try these examples on your own… 40-99 Try these examples on your own… 40 Cuarenta 50 Cincuenta 60 Sesenta 70 Setenta 80 Ochenta 90 Noventa 41 56 63 74 82 99

Check your work… 41 – cuarenta y uno 56 – cincuenta y seis 63 – sesenta y tres 74 – setenta y cuatro 82 – ochenta y dos 99 – noventa y nueve

100 Cien Ciento Use cien when simply naming the number 100, Use ciento when counting from 101-199

How high can you go??? You now have the skills to count all the way up to 199! To go from 35 to 135, just add the word CIENTO in front… 35 – treinta y cinco 135 – ciento treinta y cinco
