Genesis 13-14 Lesson 9

Review Abram had gone to Egypt because of a famine in Canaan He told Sarai to say she was his sister He feared for his safety Pharaoh took Sarai to his house God sent plagues on Pharaoh Pharaoh returned Sarai to Abram and sent them away

Abram Leaves Egypt Ge 13:1 Then Abram went up from Egypt, he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot with him, to the South. (NKJV) 1 And Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the South. (ASV)

Canaan Abraham Patriarchs

Canaan Back To Bethel Egypt Patriarchs

Abram Was Rich The property of these patriarchal times did not consist in flocks only, but also in silver and gold; and in all these respects Abram was exceeding rich. Josephus says that a part of this property was acquired by teaching the Egyptians arts and sciences. Thus did God fulfill his promises to him, by protecting and giving him a great profusion of temporal blessings, which were to him signs and pledges of spiritual things.

They Could Not Dwell Together Because their flocks were great Because the Canaanites and the Perizzites had already occupied a considerable part of the land Because there appears to have been envy between the herdsmen of Abram and Lot. To prevent disputes among them, that might have ultimately disturbed the peace of the two families, it was necessary that a separation should take place.

Abram Lets Lot Choose As the patriarch or head of the family, Abram, by prescriptive right, might have chosen his own portion first, and appointed Lot his; but intent upon peace, and feeling pure and parental affection for his nephew, he permitted him to make his choice first. Yielding to preference of others Lesson??

Lot’s Choice The well watered plains He certainly should have left the choice to the patriarch, and should have been guided by his counsel; but he took his own way, trusting to his own judgment, and guided only by the sight of his eyes: he beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered, etc Respecting older counsel Lesson??

Lot’s Choice so he chose the land, without considering the character of the inhabitants, or what advantages or disadvantages it might afford him in spiritual things. This choice, as we shall see in the sequel, had nearly proved the ruin of his body, soul, and family. Spiritual impact of decisions Lesson??

Our Choices Respect for others (especially older) Listen to counsel Seek our own way Trust our own judgment Guided by false appearances Do not consider associations Fail to consider spiritual affect Results in ruin of his body, soul, and family.

Lot’s Future?? Ge 13:13 But the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful against the LORD.

Promises Repeated Ge 13:14 And the LORD said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him: "Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are-northward, southward, eastward, and westward; "for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever. "And I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth; so that if a man could number the dust of the earth, then your descendants also could be numbered. "Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you."

Promises Repeated This land was given to Abram, that it might lineally and legally descend to his posterity; and though Abram himself cannot be said to have possessed it, Acts 7:5, yet it was the gift of God to him in behalf of his seed; and this was always the design of God, not that Abram himself should possess it, but that his posterity should, till the manifestation of Christ in the flesh.

Kings At War It appears, from Ge 14:4, that these five Canaanitish kings had been subdued by Chedorlaomer, and were obliged to pay him tribute; and that, having been enslaved by him twelve years, wishing to recover their liberty, they revolted in the thirteenth;

Kings At War in consequence of which Chedorlaomer, the following year, summoned to his assistance three of his vassals, invaded Canaan, fought with and discomfited the kings of the Pentapolis or five cities-Sodom, Gomorrah, Zeboiim, Zoar, and Admab, which were situated in the fruitful plain of Sodom, having previously overrun the whole land

Lot Captured Ge 14:12 They also took Lot, Abram's brother's son who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed. Abram takes 318 of his trained servants to rescue Lot He travels north to Dan and on north of Damascus

Lot Rescued Ge 14:6 So he brought back all the goods, and also brought back his brother Lot and his goods, as well as the women and the people.

Melchizedek Melchizedek is called here king of Salem, and the most judicious interpreters allow that by Salem, Jerusalem is meant. Very mysterious, and at the same time typical, in the person, name, office, residence, and government of this Cannanitish prince. In his person he was a representative and type of Christ His name, signifies my righteous king, or king of righteousness

Melchizedek Office; he was a priest of the most high God. The word signifies both prince and priest, because the patriarchs sustained this double office, to approach, draw near, have intimate access to; and from hence to officiate as priest before God, and thus have intimate access to the Divine presence. We find that Melchizedek, being a priest of the most high God.

Melchizedek His residence; he was king of Salem. It means peace. Christ is called the Prince of peace, because, by his incarnation, sacrifice, and mediation, he procures and establishes peace between God and man; heals the breaches and dissensions between heaven and earth, reconciling both; and produces glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace and good will among men.

Abram’s Tithe A tenth part of all the spoils he had taken from the confederate kings. These Abram gave as a tribute to the most high God, who, being the possessor of heaven and earth, dispenses all spiritual and temporal favors, and demands the gratitude, and submissive, loving obedience, of all his subjects.
