Integers & Rational numbers Unit 2 *Note: This PowerPoint will continue to grow. Please check back regularly for added slides and information covered in class

Enduring Understandings: Essential Questions:   ·        Rational numbers use the same properties as whole numbers. ·        Rational numbers can be used to represent and solve real-life situation problems. ·        Rational numbers can be represented with visuals (including distance models), language, and real-life contexts. ·        A number line model can be used to represent the unique placement of any number in relation to other numbers. ·        There are precise terms and sequences to describe operations with rational numbers. Essential Questions: ·        Why do I need mathematical operations? ·        What is the relationship between properties of operations and types of numbers? ·        How do I know which mathematical operation (+, -, x, ÷, exponents, etc.) to use? ·        How do I know which computational method (mental math, estimation, paper and pencil, and calculator) to use? ·        How do you add rational numbers? ·        How do you subtract rational numbers? ·        How do you multiply rational numbers? ·        How do you divide rational numbers? ·        How is computation with rational numbers similar to and different from whole number computation? ·        How are rational numbers used and applied in real-life and mathematical situations? ·        How does the ongoing use of fractions and decimals apply to real-life situations?

Adding & subtracting integers Topic A

terms

Tips for parents In Topic A, students are introduced to the Integer Game, in which they use a number line to visualize the addition and subtraction of integers and other rational numbers. The goal of the Integer Game is for students to become more efficient at adding and subtracting rational numbers, which the class will be doing throughout this topic. You can expect to see homework that asks your child to do the following: Use the Integer Game to discuss additive inverses (for example, 5 and −5), write expressions, and explain how to add and subtract with integers. Use vectors on a number line (see Sample Problems) to model expressions. Evaluate addition and subtraction expressions involving integers and other rational numbers. Write and evaluate expressions that involve operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and absolute values.

Rules for Adding & Subtracting integers Do not subtract integers. You must change the signs: *Add the opposites* 1. Keep – Change – Change Keep the sign of the first number Change the subtraction sign to addition Change the sign of the second number to the opposite sign. If it is positive, change it to negative. If it is negative, change it to positive. 2. USE THE RULES OF ADDITION Adding Integers Same Sign Add and keep the sign Different Sign Subtract and Keep the sign of the number with the larger absolute value (larger number)

Multiplying & Dividing integers Topic B

Rules for Multiplying & dividing integers Same Sign = Positive Ex: (-4)(-6) = 24 (4)(6) = 24 Different Sign = Negative Ex: (-4)(6) = -24 (4)(-6) = -24 Exponents: −8 2  (-8)(-8) = 64
