Let the light of Christ shine in our lives Gather The Lord be with you And also with you Let the light of Christ shine in our lives

Receive Jesus said to his disciples, "I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! From the Gospel according to Luke, chapter 12, verses 22-24

Engage Francis' father was a prosperous silk merchant. Francis lived the high-spirited life typical of a wealthy young man, even fighting as a soldier for Assisi. While going off to war in 1204, Francis had a vision that directed him back to Assisi, where he lost his taste for his worldly life. On a pilgrimage to Rome, he joined the poor in begging at St. Peter's Basilica. The experience moved him to live in poverty. Francis returned home, began preaching on the streets, and soon gathered followers.

Engage Some discussion ideas … St Francis is known as a person who had respect for animals – how can we show respect for animals in today’s world? The monastic orders that Francis created mean that the monks and nuns give up their worldly belongings – what would you be prepared to give up to help others?

Respond Give us the grace to see all animals as gifts from You and to treat them with respect for they are Your creation. Amen extract from St Francis’ prayer for animals
