Presentation transcript:

Is the basic unit of living things. The cell Is the basic unit of living things.

Characteristics of life Organization The ability to develop and grow The ability to respond to the environment The ability to reproduce

All living things are made up of cells Unicellular- organisms that are made up of a single cell. Multicellular- organisms that are made up of many cells

The Cell Theory Every living thing is made up of one or more cells. Cells carry out the functions needed to support life. Cells come only from other living cells.

Parts of cells Cell membrane a protective covering that encloses the entire cell. Cytoplasm is a gelatin-like material inside the cell membrane. Nucleus is the brain of the cell and contains the DNA. Organelle is any part of a cell that is enclosed by a membrane.

Two types of cells Prokaryotic cell has no nucleus. Most unicellular organisms are prokaryotic. Eukaryotic cells has a nucleus. Most multicellular organisms are eukaryotic.
