Vocab and Solubility Curves

Vocabulary: 1. Solute: Substance being dissolved (Ex. Sugar) 2. Solvent: Substance the solute is dissolved in (Ex. Water) * Does the “dissolving” 3. Solution: The mixture of a solvent and at least 1 solute

4. Solubility: The ability of a substance to be dissolved The measure of how much solute can dissolve in a given solvent at a given temperature 5. Dissolved: When a solute in no longer visible in the solution

6. Insoluble: Incapable of being dissolved Ex. Vegetable oil & Water 7. Soluble: Capable of being dissolved Solids in liquids - Ex. NaCl dissolved in H₂O Liquids in liquids - Ex. Food coloring dissolved in H2O Gases in liquids - Ex: CO2 in soda and O2 in H₂O

8. Unsaturated: More solute could be added 9. Saturated: The solution is “full” of solute * No more can be added 10. Supersaturated: There is more solute than can fit 11. Suspension: Mixture - particles can be seen easily * Like sand in water

Factors that Affect Solubility Temperature: Increase Temp = Increase Solubility Molecule Size: Larger Particles, decrease solubility Stirring (ONLY increases the dissolving rate) For Gases: Increase Pressure, Increase Solubility of a Gas Increase Temperature, Decrease Solubility of a Gas
