Southern African Solutions to Public Transport Challenges Robert Ambunda Stellenbosch University: Department of Transport Engineering Email: 17069874@sun.ac.za Southern African Transport Conference 2017

Transport Situation in Southern Africa Most countries have tried to make public transport appealing to the masses Most cities in Southern Africa have a car orientated transport development pattern Traffic congestions is the most visible transport problem in Southern Africa Fig. 1 City Congestion Southern African Transport Conference 2017

Southern African Transport Conference 2017 Land Use and Transit Public transport and land use are interlinked Cities with high population densities are able to introduce high capacity transit systems Public Transport unappealing to most people due to long walking distances and in-efficient services Integrating sub- urban and intra- urban public transport systems makes it accessible to both rural and urban populations Southern African Transport Conference 2017

Southern African Transport Vision Designing an efficient public transport system with focus beyond urban areas Designing a integrated public transport system, connecting the population to vital services, assisted by an ITS- enabled infrastructure. Using smart ticketing and smart scheduling enabled by ITS, allowing for the relay of real time information. Fig. 2 Relay of Real Time Information Southern African Transport Conference 2017

Southern African Transport Vision Extra road user and place of use charges and will be levied to encourage the use of the public transport system and deter private vehicles entering areas prone to congestion Substantial funding and changes to transport regulations in Southern Africa will be needed. Fig. 3 Public Transport System Southern African Transport Conference 2017

Southern African Transport Conference 2017 Recommendations Extensive traffic flow studies on rural and urban areas Private Public Partnerships and huge financial commitments from governments Future of public transport lies in improving efficiency and effectiveness of systems in place and those introduced.
