Update on ATLAS insertable B-layer LHCC Upgrade session CERN, September, 22nd 2009 G. Darbo - INFN / Genova Indico agenda page: http://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=67640

IBL Project Status Project approved by ATLAS Project Leader endorsed by ATLAS CB (February 20th) IBL has put in place its management structure (Management Board) – members nominated ATLAS Institutes Participation IBL Kick-off (July 8th) meeting with Institute’s Leaders to focus participation in the project. Large interest in the project (~35÷40 institutes participated at the kick-off meeting and have shown interest in parts of the project) Project cost evaluated and funding model proposed: 4.0 MCH (M&O-A), 5.6 MCH (M&O-B, new project) Technical Design Report (TDR) Main editor / technical editor (K. Einsweiler / M. Capeans) and chapter editors in charge Few editor’s meetings since end of July, TDR foreseen for April 2010. Memorandum of Understanding foreseen in “interim” form by the end of the year: MoU will be signed after TDR (spring 2010)

IBL Organisation Structure Membership IBL Project Leader: G. Darbo IBL Technical Coordinator: H. Pernegger “Module” WG (2 Physicists): F. Hügging & M. Garcia-Sciveres “Stave” WG (1 Phy. + 1 M.E.): O. Sensor To put here: 3 sensor technologies to the prototype phase – decide end of 2010 Progresses in the development – pick up from sLHC R&D efforts How to converge – engineering set of specifications Have ~3 slides on sensors

FE-I4 Put here: Status Submission review in November 1 or 2 slides

Stave Design To put here Layout (preferred) Motivate the need of a small beam pipe: tight clearance, gaining 0.5 cm is large respect the available space between BL and present beam pipe, beam pipe bake-out need space for IBL safety (show thermal simulation), use an IBL PST to simplify insertion…. Show developments: Pipe, Thermal Management, Fittings, options Goal to reduce material budget from 2.7 to 1.5 %X0 ~2-3 slides

Schedule To put here Plan to install in 2014, even if not sLHC phase I: IBL as safety insurance for the present IBL Cannot be much before without sacrificing performance, Need new technology development (Sensor, FE-I4, Staves) From the machine: Need to synchronize a long shutdown (8 months) for IBL installation – in the shadow of machine element installation Motivation for an IBL and not a new Pixel (CMS) New technology do not allow a large production scale (2 years more) Make a replacement of the pixel detector with old technology difficult to find collaboration to make, and also would slow down technology improvement needed for sLHC CMS is faster in opening and inserting/connecting the new Pixel system

Some questions to the Machine To put here (help from Marzio/Nigel) Triplet optimisation will need a new TAS: what are the requirements? – what are the implications for the shielding? This could be a big impact on ATLAS! Implications for the forward muons Smaller beam is needed for IB what are the implications of a larger TAS opening and a smaller beam-pipe (and IBL)? What are the concern for the IBL safety? What else?
