“Ready For The Day of The Lord” Jesus Is Coming Again (4:13-18)

“Ready For The Day of The Lord” Jesus Is Coming Again (4:13-18) 1:10 - and to wait for His Son from heaven, … 2:19 - For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Is it not even you in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at His coming? 3:13 - so that He may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints. 4:15-17 - For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven …

18 Therefore comfort one another with these words. “Ready For The Day of The Lord” Jesus Is Coming Again (4:13-18) 1 Thessalonians 4:18 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.

“Ready For The Day of The Lord” As a Thief in the night. (5:1-4) Concerning the “times” and “seasons” Acts 1:6. The Lord's coming will be a surprise for many, as the "thief in the night" clearly indicates - 1Th 5:2; 2 Peter 3:10; Rev 16:15 But for those who heed the warnings of Scripture, the “Day" will not overtake them as a thief - 1Th 5:1-2,4 1 Thes 5:1–2 1 But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. 2 For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night.

“Ready For The Day of The Lord” As a Thief in the night. (5:1-4) FOR SOME, AN INESCAPABLE DESTRUCTION… When many (those who are unprepared) are saying "Peace and safety!" - 1Thes 5:3; Matt. 24:36–44; Mark 13:32–37; Lk 21:34,35 When He comes, it will be with "sudden destruction” & no time nor way to escape - 1Thes 5:3; cf. 2Thes. 1:7-10; 2 Pet 3:10-14; Mt. 23:33. He. 2:3; 12:25. 1 Thessalonians 5:3 3 For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape.

“Ready For The Day of The Lord” As a Thief in the night. (5:1-4) This "Day" will be one of glory for those who are ready - cf. 2Th 1:10 For those who now "sleep in Jesus" - cf. 1Thes. 4:13-16 For “Brethren, not in darkness” - cf. 1Thes. 4:17-18; Rom. 13:11– 13. Col. 1:13. 1 Pet. 2:9, 10. 1 Jn 1:5-10. What will this "Day" mean for us — destruction, or joy? 1 Thessalonians 5:4 4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief.

“Ready For The Day of The Lord” As Sons of Light and Day. (5:5-11) Because we follow Jesus, the "light of the world" - Jn 8:12; 12:35-36; Col. 1:13 Because we are now in Jesus, and walk in the light - Ep 5:8; 1Jn 1:5-7 Because we cast off works of darkness, and seek to walk properly - Ro 13:11-14 1 Thessalonians 5:5–6 5 You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.

“Ready For The Day of The Lord” As Sons of Light and Day. (5:5-11) We are to be watchful for His coming - 1Th 5:6 No one knows when Jesus will return — cf. 1Thes. 5:2; Mt 24:36, 42; Not of “night" or “darkness” — Acts 26:18; Eph. 5:8. Let us not”Sleep," not to live in spiritual laxity & death - Rom 13:11-14; Ep. 5:14; Rev 3:2,3 1 Thessalonians 5:5–6 5 You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.

1 Thessalonians 5:7–8 (NKJV) “Ready For The Day of The Lord” As Sons of Light and Day. (5:5-11) Romans 13:12–14 (NKJV) 12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. 13 Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts. 1 Thessalonians 5:7–8 (NKJV) 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. 8 But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation.

“Ready For The Day of The Lord” As Sons of Light and Day. (5:5-11) We are to be sober - 5:6-8a The word "sober" means to be temperate or abstinent, especially in regards to wine. In a more general sense to be sober-minded, watchful, circumspect — Ep. 5:15,16; Tit. 2:6, 12. 1 Pe. 1:13; 5:8. We should certainly take the promise of Jesus' coming seriously, not frivolously. 1 Thessalonians 5:7–8 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. 8 But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation.

“Ready For The Day of The Lord” As Sons of Light and Day. (5:5-11) We are to put on the armor of God — 1Th 5:8; Ro. 13:12 “The breastplate of faith and love” — “faith working by love” (Ga 5:6; cf. Eph. 6:10-18). “And as a helmet the hope of salvation” — (Ro. 5:2–5; 8:24,25; 2 Th. 2:16; He. 6:19; 10:35,36; 1 Pe. 1:3–5,13; 1 Jn 3:1–3).

(5:5-11) As sons of light & day, we have been appointed to salvation — 1Th 5:9-10 He has not appointed us to wrath — (cf. Ro 2:4-11; 1Th 1:10) Salvation is in Christ who died for us - (Rom 5:8-10; 6:3-6; 2 Cor. 5:15; 2 Thes. 2:13) So, whether we live or die, we should live together with Christ! - (cf. 1Th 4:14,17; Php 1:21-23) 1 Thessalonians 5:9–10 9 For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.

“Ready For The Day of The Lord” Jesus Is Coming Again. (4:13- 5:5-11) 1 Thessalonians 5:11 11 Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing. 4:18; 2 Cor. 1:3-4; He. 3:13; 10:25; Ro. 14:19; 15:2

“Ready For The Day of The Lord” Jesus Is Coming Again. (4:13- 5:5-11) Will we be prepared when Christ comes? Are you IN CHRIST? — (cf. Ac 2:38,41,47; Rom. 6:3,4; Gal. 3:26,27)? Are you continuing steadfastly in the apostles doctrine (cf. Ac 2:42)? Are we watchful? Putting on the armor of God? Actively engaged in comforting and edifying our brethren?
