“Remembering Kyoto” Remembering Kyoto Like the phoenix risen from fiery ash, like the weary soldier returned from the bloodied tears of battle, she remains solid in the heart. Ancient imperial shrine of beauty, temple gardens silent and still, humble Geisha pouring sacred tea, strolls up Ninen-zaka, Two-Year Hill she is the light of the land of Rising Sun. Cherry blossoms dance on Spring’s seamless waters, Mountains cloaked red, orange, yellow Singing Fall’s sweet hymns Shade of summer’s green down Philosopher’s Walk Winter’s snowy breath embraces all below and above, she is nature’s ever-changing craft. Memories paint upon sleep’s soft canvas, chants, now mere whispers, soothe the many miles, like the root of the lotus, her history runs deep. Of life’s many paths, like the folds of the paper fan, All reach back to her… She is Kyoto.
