Wind Day 1 ENGAGE EXPLORE Convection cell activity Quick write What do we know about wind? EXPLORE What causes wind? Convection cell activity Quick write Wind intro video Concept map Group discussion Days agenda Research project assignment

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT WIND ENERGY ? Wind Day 1 ENGAGE WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT WIND ENERGY ? QUICK WRITE PROMPT Where does energy we use every day come from? List as many sources of energy as you can. Engage: Access prior knowledge and create interest & curiosity

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT WIND ENERGY ? Wind Day 1 ENGAGE WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT WIND ENERGY ? VVO WIND INTRO VIDEO This dynamic video shows that there are many different types of interactions with wind. From destruction to calm breezes, It shows the damage as well as the constructive nature of wind. It certainly gets you thinking about and discussing it.

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT WIND ENERGY ? Wind Day 1 ENGAGE WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT WIND ENERGY ? PROMPT for Concept Bubble Map Reflection and analysis of video What was that video all about?” What did you see?

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT WIND ENERGY ? ENGAGE WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT WIND ENERGY ? Wind Day 1 Starting with wind as the first bubble create a concept map based upon student remark to the video Sample concept bubble map

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT WIND ENERGY ? ENGAGE WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT WIND ENERGY ? Wind Day 1 Team Perspective All agree on a definition of WIND. Write it in your notebook. With in the team share personal experiences with wind: kites, paper planes, hurricanes, sailboats etc. Class share out definitions and most interesting experiences. Connect the topic to prior experiences. Form teams of four that will work together for the week. Develop some team building.

Wind Day 1 EXPLORE WHAT CAUSES WIND ? Convection Cell activity a process that functions because heated fluids, due to their lower density, rise and cooled fluids fall. Photo from foossolvesunified.com/.../EnvSci/EarthCells.gif In the explore phase of this lesson students can complete the simple activities in the day one lesson to see how convection cells are formed and discover patterns of the cells. There are many different ways to do this activity I chose everyday inexpensive materials.

Wind Day 1 EXPLORE WHAT CAUSES WIND ? Convection cell activity Trial 3 The colored dots represent the spots to place the food coloring. Have students complete the drawings on the lab pages and write their notes, conclusions and reflections in the notebook. Trial 3 Trial 4 Trial 1 Trial 2 The colored dots represent the location of the food coloring

Wind Day 1 QUICK WRITE PROMPT EXPLORE WHAT CAUSES WIND ? Convection cell activity QUICK WRITE PROMPT Have students do quick write in their notebooks. Was this activity a good model of what happens in the ocean? Why or why not? What are some limitations of this model?

Wind Day 1 Assessment What is good about wind energy? FINAL PROJECT PowerPoint Presentation Wind Day 1 Pass out research guidelines and scoring rubrics to students. Presentations will be given on the last day of this unit. Use the web link resource page for a beginning the research. What is good about wind energy? What is bad about wind energy? What are your predictions for the future of wind energy?

Wind Day 1 Assessment 9/8/09 Charles Gibson reported on ABC News FINAL PROJECT PowerPoint Presentation Wind Day 1 9/8/09 Charles Gibson reported on ABC News http://abcnews.go.com/video/playerIndex?id=8520449 China has doubled its capacity for energy from wind over each of the 4 years China will pass the USA THIS YEAR as the #! Producer of wind turbines China invested 40% of its stimulus package into green business The USA invested just 12% When considering the future of wind energy in the USA take into account this story from ABC news. How does this type of competition hurt or help the United States ?
