Educate and inform (DMDA News web/ service, DMDA Summit). Support public policies that encourage the growth of the digital media market.

© Digital Media Device Association December 4, 2002 Tom White (6) Interoperability Working Group Mission: To develop or adopt one or more specifications for the lawful consumption and exchange of music in digital form on portable and networked audio devices, which will encourage competition and allow consumers freedom of choice. Focus is on audio today, with an eye on video and other content.

© Digital Media Device Association December 4, 2002 Tom White (7) Device Interoperability is… Remote discovery and control of devices Search, locate, and manage content on remote devices Exchange files and content meta-data

© Digital Media Device Association December 4, 2002 Tom White (8) Why Interoperability? More choices for consumers, and increased competition, means a bigger market. Necessary to fulfill consumer expectation of music anywhere and anytime. Required for content management standards and delivery services to have mass acceptance.

© Digital Media Device Association December 4, 2002 Tom White (11) Submission Requirements A document with sufficient detail for experts to review proposed solution A list of resource requirements Proposed licensing terms Presenters will have one hour in Feb. to present a working demo, if possible.

© Digital Media Device Association December 4, 2002 Tom White (12) Some Evaluation Criteria Preference will be given to solutions that (in no specific order): –Also support image and/or video –Are based on open standards –Are free of royalties and licensing fees (other than optional maintenance fees) –Are scalable/expandable/ –Have low resource requirements

© Digital Media Device Association December 4, 2002 Tom White (13) A Few More Specifics… Solutions must be capable of operating on low cost battery-operated devices with limited memory and bandwidth. Solutions must not be dependent on any particular physical interface. Solutions must be able to support exchange of Content Usage Rules (to be defined).
