Learning Objective: Today I will be able to explain why the U.S. entered WWII by answering a questionnaire. Agenda: Learning Objective Lecture Notes: Ch. 16.2 U.S. Enters WWII Pearl Harbor Exit Slip

Lecture Notes: Ch. 16.2 U.S. Enters WWII Japanese are expanding to China and countries in Southeast Asia.

Japan invades China & Southeast Asia 1931, Japan invades Manchuria (country north of China) Later in 1931, Japan invades China Chinese resistance drags the invasion, therefore, Japanese use & need more resources.

Americans Learn Japan’s Plans 1940, American intelligence crack Japanese codes: U.S. knows Japan’s plans to take over Southeast Asia U.S. also knows that Japan plans to attack U.S., they just did not know when or where it would occur. But why attack the U.S.? Capt. Joseph J. Rochefort led many of the key Station HYPO codebreakers who correctly deciphered Japanese messages about Midway.

Japan began to invade European controlled Asian countries: French Indochina, Vietnam, Laos, & Cambodia (French) The U.S. knew that Japan would eventually invade U.S. controlled countries in Southeast Asia. Guam & Philippines

The U.S. sent aid to Chinese resistance & cut all oil supplies to Japan that was needed to continue their plan to expand. Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto saw this move as a threat & called for an attack on the U.S. fleet in Hawaii—Pearl Harbor.

Pearl Harbor Early Sunday morning of December 7, 1941—Japanese Kamikaze's attack Pearl Harbor. 2,400 dead, 1,100 wounded,19 ships sunk, & 350 airplanes destroyed.

U.S Declares War U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked to declare war against Japan & its allies (Axis Powers—Germany, Italy, & Japan) Congress accepted that very same day of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Pearl Harbor, 2001 The Japanese Attack Scene Exit Slip Americans broke the Japanese code, what did the code say? Could this attack have been prevented? Why or why not? What effect do you think thee attack on Pearl have on Americans? Exit Slip Provide an example of a more recent attack made on the U.S., how might that attack be similar or different to Pearl Harbor?
