Introduction to Radioactivity Some substances are classed as “radioactive” – this means that they are unstable and continuously give out radiation: Radiation The nucleus is more stable after emitting some radiation – this is called “radioactice decay” and the activity is measured in “Becquerels (Bq)”. 23/02/2019

Some Isotopes are radioactive A radioactive substance has an unstable nucleus. The unstable nucleus can become more stable by losing energy (it decays). It loses energy by emitting 3 types of ionising radiation. You cannot predict when a nucleus will decay:- it is a random process
