Imaginations engraved on Stone Orissa… Imaginations engraved on Stone

Shree Jagannath Temple, puri Located about 60 kms from the capital city in the small coastal town of puri, the shree jagannath Temple is one of four most sacred Hindu Pilgrim centres (dhams). This holy abode of Lord Jagannath is held in great reverence by people around the country and is thronged by devotees throughout the year.Deeply integrated with the cultural and religious life of every oriya, the puri Jagannath Temple is also an example is also an example of exquisite archite. The temple set amidst a clusterof smaller shrines, with four gateways in four cardinal directions is a four chambered complex and rises to a heieght of 215 feet. The walls are decorated with sculptures depicting Krishna-lila themes along with dasavatara and other divine,semi-divine and human figures.

Sun Temple ,Konark Famed world wide as the black pagoda, the sun temple at konark is an architectural marvel and rightly finds a place in the world heritage list. Dating back to the 13th century Ad, The konark temple has been built in the form of a colossal chariot of the mythical sun-god, drawn by seven horses and 24th wheels. The architectural plan and execution of the temple speaks about the deft craftsmanship of Orissa’s sculptors. The embellishments on the structure create a sense of wonder for the beauty they exude.Located in a tranquil ambience of the chandrabhaga beach, the konark sun temple is a must see.

Lingaraj temple,Bhubaneswar Lingaraj temple, one of the most revered shaiva shrines has a special significance for Bhubaneswar-the capital city of Orissa.Because Bhubaneswar considered as a shaiva pitha derives its name from tribhuvaneswar(Lord shiva).Having around 150 smaller shrines in its vicinity, the 180 feet high lingaraj temple stands majestically with lavishly sculpted walls. The temple is known for its astounding architectural features.Owing to the richness of its surface treatment, the lingaraj temple is considered as one of the most refind manifestations of temple architecture in india.

Mukteswar Temple,Bhubaneswar One of the smallest and the most compact temples found in the capital city, the 10th century Ad mukteswar temple is acclaimed as ‘the gem of orissan architecture’.The most notable feature of the temple is its ornately decorated arched gateway, known as torana.this is one of the two temples in Bhubaneswar to have a carved ceiling inside its jagamohana(porch). The mukteswar temple marks a transition between the earlier groups and the later standardized temples of Orissa.

Rajarani Temple,Bhubaneswar Built around the mid 11th century Ad,the rajarani temple marks another phase of evolution in orissan temple architecture.Originally known as indreswara temple, the rajarani temple is devoid of a reigning deity. The cluster of miniature shikharas around the superstructure are reminiscent of the kandariya mahadev temple of khajuraho. The temple is known for its exotic combination of architectural excellence, sculptural elegance, ornate decoration and multiple scroll work.Standing at the end of a vast and well-maintained garden, the rajarani temple attracts many visitors-both Indians and foreigners all year round.

64 Yogini shrine,Hirapur Dating back to the 9th century AD,the 64(Chausath) yogini shrines give a glimpse of the religious and occult practices of medieval times.Todwy only four of the architecturally distinct 64 yogini shrines survive in india.Out of themtwo are in Orissa, one at hirapur(15km from Bhubaneswar) and the other at the twin villages of ranipur and jharial. The temple at hirapur has a distinct architecture as compared to rest of the temples of the state.it is a circular structure,30 feet in diameter built of coarse sandstone and has barely 8 feet high walls containing 64 niches to house the sculptures of yoginis or Dakinis(2 feet in hight). This temple takes the visitor into a mysterious ride of the supernatural powers.

Dhauli Dhauli hill on the bank of river daya in the outskirts of Bhubaneswar is a site of great historical significance. The famous kalinga war which led to the miraculous transformation of Emperor Ashoka was fought here around 260 Bc.Dhauli houses major edicts of ashoka engraved on a mass of rock. The rockcut elephant above the edicts is the earliest Buddhist sculpture of Orissa.Atop the Dhauli hill, stands a majestic white peace pagoda (Shanti Stupa) built by the Japanese monks in 1970s.

Lalitgiri Lalitgiri is the oldest Buddhist complex found in the state and of the earlist Buddhist establishments of the world.Found to be dating back to the 1st century Ad,Lalitgiri possesses significant archaeological remains which make it a place of great Buddhist attraction. An extensive monastery complex with a long stairway, sculptures of Dhayani Biddha and bodhisattvas and an image of lokeswara holding a large lotus are among the precious remains excavated from this site.

Ratnagiri Around 100km away from Bhubaneswar ,the Ratnagiri hill range surrounded by rivers houses many significant Buddhist remains.Excavations at this site establish its relation to the gupta dynasty and indicate its existence dating back to the 6th century Ad.A huge monastery suggested to be belonging to the Mahayana sect of Buddhism and other chaityas and stupas are among the treasures unearthed here.As evident from Tibetan Buddhist texts, ratnagiri was also a place of learning for the Buddhism tantric cult called vajrayana.Besides,Kalchakrayana had also considerably flourished in this area.

Udaygiri Located in the jajpur district of Orissa,Udayagiri treasures the largest Buddhist complex of Orissa.Excavations at the site suggest that it existed and flourished between 7th -12th century Ad.A large brick monastery with many Buddhist sculptures has been unearthed from this site. Besides, buddhsattva and Dhayani Buddha figures have also been recovered.

Langudi This is a recently discovered Buddhist site of Orissa which stands distinct with its 34 unique rock-cut stupas. These stupas of varying sizes carved exquisitely in low relief resemble Amravati group of Buddhist art in south india, considered a major centre of early Buddhist art.Discovery of an inscription has confirmed langudi’s identity as puspagiri which finds mention in hiuen tsang’s travelogue si-u-ki.

Khandagiri & Udaygiri Belonging to the 1st century Bc, the khandagiri and udayagiri caves are the major rock-cut wonders of Orissa. The famous hathigumpha inscription on these hills reveals that the great emperor of ancient Orissa, mahameghavahana aira kharavela had built these caves for thee jain ascetics. the caves spread over the twin hills of khandagiri and udayagiri near Bhubaneswar bear names like ranigumpha, ganesh gumpha, manchapuri Gumpha, navamuni Gumpha etc. and are divided into two groups. the earlier group dates back to 1st century bc and the latter bolong to the 9th and 11th centure AD. the walls of these caves depict the stories of those times and the sculptures exhibit the brilliance of architecture.
