Main Activity Today we are going to sort things into groups and write them in tables.

We use a lot of long words in mathematics. Do you think that most of them have more than five letters? How can we check this?

Use cards with words from maths on them. Choose a card. Count how many letters your word has.

Who has a word with three letters? Who has a word with four letters? Who has a word with five letters?

Group Work Estimate the most common word length in a poem. Sort the information into a table and make up some questions about the data. Make a chart for a class display, which shows the number of letters in each person’s name.
