The Rock Cycle
Igneous Rocks
When hot magma cools it becomes igneous rock. Intrusive rocks- rocks that form from magma below the Earth’s surface Extrusive rocks- rocks that form when magma cools on the Earth’s surface
Metamorphic Rock
Rocks that change because of heat or pressure are called metamorphic rocks. Slate, gneiss, and marble are types of metamorphic rock.
Foliated metamorphic rocks are formed when grain flatten and line up in layers. Nonfoliated metamorphic rocks don’t form layers
Sedimentary rock
Sedimentary rocks are formed when sediments are pressed and cemented together. Sedimentary rocks often form in layers.
Creating sedimentary rock….. 1- Sediments wear away from existing rocks after weathering and erosion. 2-The sediments move to a new location and are deposited. Pressure builds up and pushes down on lower layers. This is called COMPACTION. 3- CEMENTAION occurs when water moves through the compacted sediments. The water dissolves materials and acts like a glue to hold the sediments together.
