Careers Activity Before we get started, I want each of you to tell me what career you have decided to study during our time together. Please grab an index card. Remember to write your name and the career you have chosen. Last week, each of you wrote about the career you decided to learn more about. Please take a few minutes with a partner to share. You have 2 minutes.

Tomorrow starts today! Getting ready for your future now Some of you might think that going to college and starting your career wont happen for a really long time. Some of you might even feel overwhelmed by all of the college and career information we have gone over.

What does it take to get into college Turn to page 28-29 in your student handbook Getting into college requires more than just graduating from high school. You need to prove to colleges that you are capable of being successful. The people responsible for deciding who gets into college are called admissions counselors.

Admissions Counselor Let’s, pretend that you are a college admissions counselor and decide what is important information for applying to college

3-5 minutes Turn to page 28-29 Assume that you are the admissions counselors for the University of Alaska Anchorage and you are responsible for selecting the best students for your university. What qualifications do you think are important? How can you identify the best students for your school? What makes a good student? Beyond grades, what else would make a student stand out to an admissions counselor?

Things to Consider How are your grades? Do you work hard? What classes are you taking? What classes did you take in high school? Did you challenge yourself? How do you compare to other students?

High School Course Requirements for post secondary education Admission counselors want to know that if you take classes at their college, you will be successful. One of the best ways to measure this is by looking at your grades and classes. If you are taking challenging courses in high school and doing well, that is a good predictor that you can handle college level work. What classes are important to take. It’s important to take English, math, science all the way through high school. Its also important to study social studies and take a foreign language. One important class you can take in middle school to prepare for college is algebra. Many schools allow you to take this course in eighth grade and receive credit your freshman year. Turn to page 82. One thing you noticed that you did not know before.

Middle School: Your first step towards reaching your goals It might sound like everything you need to do to get ready for college happens in high school. This isn’t the case! There are things you can do now in middle school to put yourself on track.

6th grade Develop good study habits Attend school regularly Do your homework Keep talking to your parents Make sure you know your learning style (how do you learn better, seeing, hearing doing)

How do we learn best? How many of you have ever thought about how you learn? What do you know about your learning style? Do you learn best when you do something or if someone tells you instructions? Each of us has our own unique way of taking in information and remembering it. The way you learn and process information is called your learning style. By figuring out how you learn, you can develop study habits that will maximize your learning potential.

Remember, ask yourself: What are some academic support services that you are aware of? Have you taken advantages of these opportunities? What are some academic enrichment opportunities?
