I. Ruling Puerto Rico Post Spanish-American War: Puerto Rico resented U.S. control. Foraker Act ended U.S. military rule, set up civil government. 1917, Puerto Ricans made U.S. citizens.
II. Cuba and the U.S. Teller Amendment says U.S. has no intention of taking over Cuba. However…. after the war, U.S. occupies Cuba. Cuban protestors imprisoned or exiled. U.S. makes Cuba add Platt Amendment to its 1901 constitution. Cuba became a U.S. protectorate, a country whose affairs are partially controlled by a stronger power.
III. Filipinos Rebel Filipinos outraged at Treaty of Paris call for annexation. 1899, Emilio Aguinaldo leads fight for independence against U.S. U.S. forces Filipinos to live in poor conditions.
Filipinos rebel against the U.S., lasts 3 years. 20,000 Filipinos & 4,000 Americans killed War costs $400 million, U.S. had purchased the Philippines for $20 million. 1946 Philippines become independent.
IV. Foreign Influence in China U.S. sees China as a vast potential market, investment opportunity. France, Britain, Japan, and Russia have settlements, spheres of influence.
U.S. Secretary of State John Hay issues Open Door notes. Notes ask imperialist nations to share trading rights with U.S. Other powers reluctantly agree.
The Boxer Rebellion in China Europeans dominate most large Chinese cities. Chinese form secret societies, including Boxers, to expel foreigners. Boxers kill hundreds of foreigners, Chinese converts to Christianity. U.S., Britain, France, Germany, Japan put down Boxer Rebellion.
U.S. Open Door Policy reflects beliefs about U.S. economy: Growth depends on exports. U.S. has the right to keep markets open. Closing of area threatens U.S. survival.
V. The Impact of U.S. Territorial Gains William McKinley’s reelection confirms most Americans favor imperialism. Anti-Imperialist League is formed. All agree that it is wrong to rule others without their consent.
