Location of the Han The Han Dynasty was located in Eastern China from 206 B.C.E – 220 C.E

Facts about the Han The Han Dynasty was a period of economic prosperity Gaodi Emperor; First emperor of the Western Han Dynasty One of the greatest Han Dynasty achievements was the invention of paper.

Society in the City Nobles and ordinary Chinese lived in the city. Nobles has big and comfortable homes with a courtyard and gate. Ordinary people lived in small 1 story homes. Women usually did not have their own rooms. Ordinary people had to work hard as opposed to the Nobles.

Society in the Country Chinese farmers lived and grew their crops out in the country. They worked hard from sunrise to sunset. Rice was a huge crop for the south and the North grew wheat and millet. Farmers lived in 2 storied homes. Men between ages 20-50 had to serve the government for one month each year.

Social Hierarchy

Food There was a great abundance of food due to a lot of farming and raising of animals by the peasants. Diets consisted of chestnuts, pears, plums, peaches, melons, and bamboo shoots. They also consumed geese, cows, sheep, camels and dogs.

Population Growth They had an increase in urbanization, growth of industry, trade, and nationalization The empire expanded westward to as far as the Tarim Basin. They had trade routes which brought many new cultures to their empire. There were remarkable advances in science and technology during the Han dynasty.

Culture Education, culture, and science were huge during the Han Dynasty. Rulers instituted a Confucian system of government; government officials were issued based on merit, instead of being born into it. Once paper was invented, painting and calligraphy flourished, and fine porcelain was created.

Economy The economy became badly damaged due to the policies of the former dynasty. Heavy taxes were imposed on the peasant population. Construction of The Great Wall took a toll on china as well.

The Fall When population started growing people needed more food, farmers could not provide enough food and many people began to starve. Individuals started making more money which made the currency less valuable and things got very expensive. Social order became mixed up because poverty started to spread due to huge families with no income. The Han empire collapsed by 220 CE.

Han vs US During the Han dynasty, cities were urbanizing really fast which caused a huge population growth. They didn’t have enough workers to keep up with society’s demands. City urbanization of today are urbanizing extremely fast but we have a strong government that can control the economy.
