Four steps for a good referral to vocational services 1. Be knowledgeable about all the vocational services available in your area so you can match to the person you are working with. 2. Discuss with the individual the various options & what is required for each. 3. With the person’s written permission, prepare a referral letter with information needed for eligibility & stressing the person’s strengths. 4. Prepare the individual for referral to the vocational program and prepare the program for the individual. continue

Pop quiz on referrals for vocational services Which of these is something a mental health practitioner or clinician should do for a good referral: 1.Explain the impact of work on benefits. 2.Help the individual with a resume first. 3.Learn about all vocational providers & coach the individual about how to present himself. 4.Alert the person to the discrimination they may face in the workplace.
