Chapter 2-1 What is a microscope?

What is a microscope? MICROSCOPE- is a tool that makes things look larger. Micro- means “very small” Scope- means “to look at”

A lens is a piece of curved glass or other clear material A lens is a piece of curved glass or other clear material. Light that passes through a lens is bent. The bending of the light rays causes the object to look either larger or smaller.

TYPES OF LIGHT MICROSCOPES: Simple microscope- has only one lens Compound microscope - has two or more lenses. Using two lenses makes things look larger rather than using one lens.

History of a microscope: The first compound microscope was invented by Hans and Zacharias Janseen in 1590 in Denmark. Since then, many scientists and people used a microscope. Microscopes that we use in the classroom are called compound light microscopes.

Checking Concepts: What is a microscope?

What causes an object to look larger or smaller than it actually is?

Where on a microscope do you place the object you want to view?

What is the difference between a simple microscope and a compound microscope?

Fill in blanks A microscope is a tool that makes objects look ___________ than they actually are. _________ holds the slide. A simple microscope has ________ lens. Microscopes used in our lab are called ____________________. Lens is a _________ glass. “Micro” means _________. “Scope” means __________. A microscope that has 2 or more lens is called __________________.
