Meiosis Cell division process whereby the number of chromosomes in a diploid cell is reduced by half through the separation of homologous chromosomes.
Meiosis Is the special form of cell division used to produce gametes It has two functions: –To form haploid cells with half the chromosome number –To re-arrange.

Presentation transcript:

Sources of Variation During Meiosis

Crossing Over Process in which homologous chromosomes exchange portions of their chromatids during meiosis.

Random Assortment of Chromosomes It is by chance that cells receive the chromosomes they receive during meiosis Any chromosome could segregate to either cell

Gene Mutation A random change in DNA can occur.

Nondisjunction Error in meiosis in which homologous chromosomes fail to separate. Can lead to genetic disorders.

Fertilization Joining of male and female sex cells Random which cells (with different DNA) unite
