1 1 11.2 Meiosis: I & II (don’t forget Interphase!...only ONCE) Meiosis I: PMAT (I) –Results in 2 haploid daughter cells…but the genetic material has recombined. –Homologous chromosomes are first paired (tetrad) and then separated. (MI  AI) –Crossing over occurs during PI: chromatids from each homologous pair of chromosomes exchange genetic material. This process contributes to genetic variation. –Independent assortment occurs during M(I): random distribution of homologous chromosomes. Also contributes to genetic variation.

2 2 Meiosis II: PMAT (II) –Results in 4 haploid daughter cells. –Sister chromatids are separated during A II. –Chromosomes are not copied (no “Interphase II”) betwn. Meiosis I and Meiosis II. Random fertilization: the zygote is made by the random joining of 2 gametes; contributes to genetic variation.
