Philippians 2:1-10

Now Saul and they and all the men of Israel were in the Valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.  1 Samuel 17:19

And David rose early in the morning and left the sheep with a keeper and took the provisions and went, as Jesse had commanded him. And he came to the encampment as the host was going out to the battle line, shouting the war cry.  1 Samuel 17:20

And Israel and the Philistines drew up for battle, army against army And Israel and the Philistines drew up for battle, army against army. And David left the things in charge of the keeper of the baggage and ran to the ranks and went and greeted his brothers.   1 Samuel 17:21,22

As he talked with them, behold, the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, came up out of the ranks of the Philistines and spoke the same words as before. And David heard him. 1 Samuel 17:23

All the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were much afraid.  1 Samuel 17:24

And the men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who has come up And the men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel. And the king will enrich the man who kills him with great riches and will give him his daughter and make his father's house free in Israel.” 1 Samuel 17:25

And David said to the men who stood by him, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” 1 Samuel 17:26

And the people answered him in the same way, “So shall it be done to the man who kills him.” 1 Samuel 17:27

The giants of fear and rejection can create the giant of complacency.

Our desire for comfort can create the giant of complacency.

What does the giant of complacency look like?

Choosing good instead of God.

“It’s my life.”

“I just want to be happy.”

Getting used to our sin.

What does the giant of complacency look like for a church?

How do we win the fight against complacency?

So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.  Philippians 2:1,2

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Philippians 2:3,4

Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, Philippians 2:5,6

but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.  Philippians 2:7,8

Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, Philippians 2:9,10

in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:10,11

We conquer the giant of complacency by remembering we live in the service of and for the glory of Christ.

We acknowledge this in our individual lives as followers of Jesus.

We acknowledge this, as a church, as we follow Jesus together.
