Transforming Knowledge in a Transformational Environment Emily Hopkins Knowledge Management Programme Manager

Health Education England HEE exists for one reason only: to support the delivery of excellent healthcare and health improvement to the patients and public of England by ensuring that the workforce of today and tomorrow has the right numbers, skills, values and behaviours, at the right time and in the right place.

HEE Objectives Thinking and leading Analysing and influencing Changing and improving Delivering and implementing Focusing on tomorrow

Workforce Transformation

Mobilising Evidence and Knowledge “Knowledge is a valuable asset that needs to be managed so that healthcare organisations are able to apply knowledge, build know-how and continue to learn in order to improve organisational efficiencies and patient outcomes” From Knowledge for Healthcare, https://www.hee.nhs.uk/sites/default/files/documents/Knowledge_for_healthcare_a_development_framework_2014.pdf

Knowledge Management team Our mission… to enable HEE to mobilise evidence and organisational knowledge to underpin policy and decisions

HEE Information Strategy Making best use of data, information, knowledge and technology as one cohesive organisation

Information Strategy Streamlining the business - How we build or buy technology unique to HEE, e.g. Management of trainees People - How we better train and develop our own staff in the use of data, information, knowledge and technology Data - How we collect, source, generate and store data; how we agree standards Our shop window - How we share information and work with our external stakeholders using the web One Infrastructure - Technologies and services that underpin and enable all other technology Knowledge Management – Tools and capability to mobilise evidence and organisational knowledge

Knowledge Management Our mission… to enable HEE to mobilise evidence and organisational knowledge to underpin policy and decisions We will enable HEE staff to: use and apply evidence obtained from research and best practice share knowledge and learning from experience share and promote innovations (HEE’s role in system transformation) consider solutions that capture and share organisational knowledge Not to be confused with LKS leads

“We are required to be system leaders and a ‘go to’ body, to advise and steer provider system investment and actions – it is very difficult to do this credibly, without some degree of evidence/ information to underpin” Head of Workforce Transformation

Mobilising evidence & managing organisational knowledge: A self-assessment framework Wouldn’t it be good if there was a way to review how well an organisation is using evidence and sharing organisational knowledge? Wouldn’t it be great if you could have a dedicated conversation with the senior leaders of an organisation to prioritise the opportunities that the library and knowledge service can deliver to help them to meet their objectives? This is the purpose of this tool. Set out in four sections and including 20 criteria this tool provides an opportunity for library and knowledge services to facilitate a self-assessment session with executive leaders to assess what is working well and what more could be done; to set priorities for better mobilising evidence and organisational knowledge and to devise and deliver an action plan so LKS can support and help the Board to meet their objectives. With thanks to Rachel Cooke, acknowledging her former work on this and with Chris Collison
