The story of Nian By: Jenny Le

Who is Nian? For many centuries there has been a legend that a dragon born with sharp teeth and long powerful tail.

What does Nian do? On the last day of the year also known as spring festival eve, Nian would come at night and destroy the crops and ate anything that was alive.

What did they do about Nian? The villagers run up to the remote mountains every year to protect themselves from Nian!!!!

Did they ever do something else to fix it? The new villager What did the new villager do? On Spring Festival a new villager came. Everyone was getting ready to leave so they didn`t pay attention to him. He asked a granny if he could stay in her house and in return they would never see the Nian wreck the village. The granny agreed and ran away with the other villagers. Later at night when Nian came he saw the house and come to it. When he saw a candle lit and he grew anger so he ran to the house and peeked in. When he saw fireworks, and also the color red. Although Nian was a powerful dragon he was awfully afraid of all of those things.

Then what happened? The dragon ran away and never came back. When the villagers came back they were surprised to see the villager still alive. So every now and then they would put candle lights, firework noise, and wear the color red on that very day.
