Ch 5: Stereotypes, Prejudice, & Discrimination Part 1: Feb. 16, 2012

Conceptual Definitions Distinguish stereotype, prejudice, discrimination from each other: Stereotype = Prejudice = Discrimination = Affective, Behavioral, Cognitive components? Groups can be ingroups (our own groups) or outgroups (groups other than our own)

Racism Less overt racism today Now, ‘modern racism’ is more likely What are these types of behaviors? Implicit racism – unconscious operation Differences in judgments of criminal defendants

Implicit Attitudes Perceptual differences How to best measure racism? Problems with self-reports: Implicit Association Test (IAT) – how does it work? Perceptual differences Ingroup vs. outgroup member judgments: What are some research results related to this?

Sexism Gender stereotypes – prescriptive vs. descriptive stereotypes Ambivalent sexism: Hostile sexism – Benevolent sexism -

Links to discrimination – Occupational differences - “sex segregation” Wage gap for comparable jobs:

Stereotype Threat Targets may clearly perceive discrimination & react Making attributions about discrimination Protecting self-esteem But negative long term effects? Claude Steele’s research on stereotype threat: face negative stereotype & fear you will be evaluated based on that  you confirm that stereotype

How does it affect performance? 1) 2) Do you need to believe in the stereotype? Steele & Aronson’s experiments – Academic performance – race differences How is stereotype threat manipulated? Academic performance – gender differences How to protect against ster. threat:

What causes prejudice? Motivational, Cognitive, & Cultural factors… 1) Motivational Factors: A) Optimal distinctiveness What is the motivation here? B) Intergroup conflict – Sherif’s “Robber’s Cave” experiment – 2 groups of boys randomly divided into groups Effect of competition?

What solutions failed in Robber’s Cave? Which solution worked best? C) Realistic Conflict theory – impact of limited resources D) Social Identity theory – status of our groups Importance of self-esteem?
