Presentation transcript:

Safety Moments Topic: Material Handling, Ergonomics, Lifting, Ladders A Safety Moment is a brief safety talk about a specific subject at the beginning of a meeting or shift. Also known as safety minutes or safety chats, these talks can be done in a variety of ways, but are typically a brief (2-5 minute) discussion on a safety related topic. They can cover a variety of safety topics and remind employees of the importance of being safe; at work, at home and in all aspects of our lives. Use one slide per Safety Moment (unless specified).

Ladder Safety Use the correct ladder for the job.   Non-conductive ladder near power lines or electrical equipment. Inspect the ladder before each use. Only one person should climb at a time. When climbing down a ladder, look before you step off a ladder to obtain a sure, safe footing. Use the correct angle, supports, treads, cross brace and rails.   Keep ladders free from slipping hazards and place on firm level surface.   Use cross bracing on the rear of a step ladder for climbing only if it is designed for that purpose. Mark defective ladders and remove from service.

Safe Lifting Make the lift: Clear the path: Size up the load: Is your path blocked by boxes, chairs, or doors?   How far will you have to carry it and will you have to go to a different floor or leave/enter a building? Will your path require a change in (potentially) slippery surfaces? Size up the load: How much does the load weigh?  If possible, consider breaking the load down into smaller more manageable loads. Consider using a cart or hand truck to move the load.  Make the lift: Use proper lifting technique, even for "light" loads. Bend at the knees, not at the back; keep your back as straight as possible. Use your legs to lift, not your back. Avoid twisting your waist or spine when lifting. Avoid awkward or uncomfortable grips; if it doesn't feel right, put it back down and reevaluate.

Ergonomics Ergonomics is the science of fitting workplace conditions and job demands to the capabilities of the working population. Improper workplace ergonomics can lead to musculoskeletal disorders, also known as repetitive stress injuries. Musculoskeletal disorders are the most common work-related health problems in the industrialized world.[2] Proper ergonomic design is necessary to prevent repetitive strain injuries, which can develop over time and can lead to long-term disability.
