What is TELSTAR? http://ctd.grc.nasa.gov/rleonard/regs1ii.html It has nothing to do with the communications satellite launched in 1962 Telstar was the first active communications satellite, and the first satellite designed to transmit telephone and high-speed data communications. Its name is used to this day for a number of television broadcasting satellites. However, the original, experimental program included just two nearly-identical satellites: "Telstar 1", launched July 10, 1962 and operational until February 21, 1963, and "Telstar 2", launched May 7, 1963 and operational until May 16, 1965.During its time in service, Telstar 1 relayed the first television pictures, telephone calls and fax images through space and provided the first live transatlantic television feed. (Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telstar)

What is TELSTAR? http://www.flickr.com/photos/telstar/ Or the single released by the Tornados in 1962, named after the communications satellite a 1962 instrumental record performed by The Tornados. It was the first single by a British band to reach number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and was also a number one hit in the UK. The record was named after the AT&T communications satellite Telstar, which went into orbit in July 1962. The song was released five weeks later on 17 August 1962. It was written and produced by Joe Meek, and featured a clavioline, a keyboard instrument with a distinctive electronic sound. "Telstar" won an Ivor Novello Award and is estimated to have sold at least five million copies worldwide. (Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telstar_(song))

What is TELSTAR? http://www.telstarthemovie.co.uk/ Or the movie about the 1962 single by the Tornados, named after the communications satellite – so if you were expecting Kevin Spacey or James Corden, I’m afraid you are going to be disappointed. “Hit after Hit … Someones going to get hurt” Starring Con O’Neill James Corden Kevin Spacey (In cinemas 19th June)

Information Literacy? What about Information Literacy? One of the intended benefits for learners (i.e. our students) is ‘enhancement of information literacy’ The project defines the following Benefits for learners: equality and consistency of service provision across courses and programmes; reduction of time spent on re-creation of bibliographic resources, and reduction of complexity in managing bibliographies; improved efficiency and quality of references created; enhancement of information literacy; support for avoiding plagiarism; improved support for lifelong learning, employability skills and the development of student scholarship; 10

“Information literacy is knowing when and why you need information, where to find it and how to evaluate, use and communicate it in an ethical manner. ” CILIP, ‘Information literacy: definition’, (2009) [online], http://www.cilip.org.uk/get-involved/advocacy/learning/information-literacy/pages/definition.aspx [20th November 2009]. records information and its sources • organises the content in a manner that supports the purposes and format of the product eg outlines, drafts, storyboards • differentiates between the types of sources cited and understands the elements and correct citation style for a wide range of resources • records all pertinent citation information for future reference and retrieval 4.2 organises (orders/classifies/stores) information • compiles references in the required bibliographic format • creates a system for organising and managing the information obtained eg EndNote, card files 11

What is a Reference? 12

What is a Reference? 1. An acknowledgement of other’s work and ideas

What is a Reference? 2. A description of a resource intended to identify the resource to the extent a copy of the resource can be discovered 14

What is a Resource? A thing that can be referenced. In the context of teaching and learning this includes…
