Textbook Reading Text Book Five Day Reading Plan

Day 1: Friday Pre-reading Strategy Just browse the Chapter. Look At: Pictures & Captions Timelines Maps Section Titles

Day 2: Saturday Skimming and Scanning Read the Introduction to the Chapter The 1st paragraph of each section The 1st sentence of each paragraph

Day 3: Sunday Careful reading of the entire chapter Read in a quiet undisturbed environment Do all reading in a single setting. Take a break every 15-20 minutes You will already have a good idea of what is in the chapter. Your are now filling in the missing details.

Day 4: Monday Skimming and Scanning + take Notes Focus on the Thesis of the Chapter Take notes ONLY on details that support the thesis – NOTHING ELSE! This should be a summation of what you read put into your own words. A good average is one page of notes to every 4-5 pages of text.

Day 5: Tuesday Note Cards On the Front of the 3x5 card Terminology Names On the Back of the 3x5 card A simple one or two sentence definition or description
