Aim: Explain the Columbian Exchange

Effects of Colonization in Americas The colonization of the Americas dramatically changed the world Prompted both voluntary and forced migration of people Colonization also resulted in the exchange of new items that greatly influenced the lives of people throughout the world The new wealth from the Americas resulted in new business and trade practices in Europe 2

The Columbian Exchange The global transfer of foods, plants, and animals during the colonization of Americas is known as the Columbian Exchange Ships from Americas brought back items for Europeans, Asians and Africans Ex: Tomatoes, squash, pineapples, tobacco, and cacao beans (chocolate) Most important items were corn and potatoes (inexpensive & nutritious) Europeans also introduced things to the Americas from Europe and Africa Ex: horses, cattle, sheep, and pigs, bananas, black-eyed peas, yams, wheat, rice, barley, and oats 3

Impact of Columbian Exchange Columbian Exchange had tragic impact on Native Americans In addition to bringing items to Americas, Europeans also brought diseases Included smallpox, measles, influenza, typhus, malaria, and diphtheria Resulted in death of millions of Native Americans Establishment of colonial empires in the Americas influenced nations of Europe New wealth coupled in growth of overseas trade Led to new business and trade practices in Europe during 16 & 17 centuries Changed economics in Europe Included growth of Capitalism- Economic system based on private ownership 4
