Healthy, Thriving Communities United Way of Sumter, Clarendon & Lee Counties Healthy, Thriving Communities Mission: The United Way of Sumter, Clarendon and Lee Counties mobilizes resources and leaders that strengthen our communities. Our board of directors just went through a strategic planning process to outline the future direction of the organization based on the needs of our community. During that time, a new vision and mission were identified along with new 10 year goals. The new vision for United Way of Sumter, Clarendon and Lee Counties is Healthy, Thriving Communities and the way were get there is by mobilizing resources and leaders that strengthen our communities. This truly summarizes what we do. We mobilize resources by raising money through workplace campaign and distributing those funds to community organizations. We leverage funds through grants and provide services and resources to meet specific needs. We engage various stakeholders and create awareness around issues facing our community. UWSCLC 10-Year Goals (by 2025) Healthy, Thriving Communities Creating the opportunities for a good life for all by focusing on: Education Increase the high school graduation rate to 90% by 2025 Income/Financial Stability Health Improve county health ranking by 5 points by 2025 Our local United Way, as well as many others around the country, is focused on addressing issues related to Education, Income or Financial Stability and Health of Clarendon, Lee, and Sumter County residents. We work will various partners to support the work being done in these areas. We have two 10-year goals. Our goal is to improve the county health ranking by 5 points by 2025. Simply put, we want to direct resources that improve the overall health of individuals. There are 33 indicators of health as outlined by the CountyHealthRankings.org In Education, our goal is to increase the high school graduation rate to 90% by 2025 in the tri-county. The 2014 average graduation rate was 78.6% for five school districts in the region. As an organization we recognize that there are numerous factors that impact on-time graduation for students and academics is only a part of it. That’s why we developed strategies that support students, families, schools and their community.

United Way Initiatives 2-1-1 Information & Referral Service 24/7, toll-free, health and human service information hotline Operated by the United Way Association of South Carolina AmeriCorps Reading Success Established in 2013; Grant application renewed 2016 Grant funded: SC Commission for National and Community Services - (32% match required) Literacy tutoring for students in grades K-3 Serving: Lee and Sumter Counties 3 school sites in Bishopville (Lee County) 6 school sites in Sumter (Sumter County) 4 afterschool program sites in Sumter (Sumter County)

United Way Initiatives Diamonds Youth Development Program Established in 2000 Funding: Sumter County Government, United Way Donations and gifts Serving: Sumter, and limited programs in Clarendon and Lee counties 95% of South Carolinians agree that teen pregnancy is an issue and more prevention efforts are needed, 84% believe sex education in public schools should emphasize abstinence AND teach about (not give)Contraception. With education there has been a 61% decline in pregnancy rates since peaking in 1991 (S C Campaign to Prevent Teen pregnancy)

Programs and Partnerships Sumter School District- classes are offered to students in multiple county schools and Diamonds has been in one of the schools more than 15 years. “Men’s Day Wednesday”- a mature man other than a teacher, visits school on Wednesdays at high traffic times. The mature males (volunteers) greet, mentor and encourage students to stay focused while pursuing their dreams. SweetFrog and Golden Corral partnered with United Way offering discount cards to students and families helping to generate parent and child communication.

Lee County Investment Workplace Campaigns: $10,002.95 raised $2,305.36 - Lee School District employees 2016 - 2017 Funding: $12,000 specifically for Lee County Family Resource Center Lee County Council on Aging The Lee Center American Red Cross and Salvation Army Funded to serve all three counties Last year, we raised $524,172. With $5,420.35 in Lee County during the campaign, nearly half of the money raised campaign from Lee County school District employees. $12,000 was allocated to programs specially for services in Lee County. Red Cross and Salvation Army receive funding to serve all three counties.
