Lesson 2-1 Writing Equations

Goals Understand the difference between expressions and equations Translate sentences into equations Translate equations into sentences

Vocabulary formula is a rule for a relationship between certain quantities What are some formulas you know?

Write Algebraic Expressions Eleven less than 𝑧 times six 6𝑧−11 Seven times a number squared 7 𝑛 2 𝑦 times two increased by fifteen 2𝑦+15 Five times the difference of 𝑘 & 𝑚 5 𝑘−𝑚

Translate Sentences into Equations Eleven less than 𝑧 times six is equal to 𝑦 times two increased by fifteen. 6𝑧−11=2𝑦+15 Seven less than 3 times a number is the same as 22. 3𝑛−7=22 Seven times a number squared is identical to five times the difference of 𝑘 & 𝑚. 7 𝑛 2 =5 𝑘−𝑚 The perimeter of a square is equivalent to the area of a triangle. What is the perimeter of a square? What is the area for a triangle? 4𝑠= 1 2 𝑏ℎ

Translate Sentences into Equations A number 𝑐 multiplied by six is equal to two more than 𝑑. 𝒅=𝟔𝒄+𝟐 𝟐𝒄=𝒅+𝟔 𝟔𝒄=𝒅+𝟐 𝒄=𝟔(𝒅+𝟐)

Translate Sentences into Equations Three less than a number 𝑎 divided by four is seven more than 3 times 𝑏. 𝟑−𝒂÷𝟒=𝟕+𝟑𝒃 𝟒𝒂−𝟑=𝟑𝒃+𝟕 𝒂−𝟑 𝟒 =𝟑𝒃+𝟕 𝒂 𝟒 −𝟑=𝟑𝒃+𝟕

Translate the equation into a verbal sentence. 12 𝑏 −4=−1 Twelve minus four divided by b is the opposite of one. Twelve less than four divided by b equals the opposite of one. Four minus twelve divided by b equals the opposite of one. Four less than the quotient of twelve and b equals the opposite of one.

Translate the equation into a verbal sentence. 5𝑎=𝑏2+1 Five plus 𝒂 equals 𝒃 squared plus one. Five times 𝒂 equals twice 𝒃 plus one. Five times 𝒂 equals 𝒃 squared plus one. The quotient of five and 𝒂 equals 𝒃 squared plus one.

Write a Story problem based on the given information. ℎ= Tim's height in inches ℎ–3= Carla's height in inches 3ℎ(ℎ–3)=8262 Carla is 3 inches shorter than Tim. The product of Carla’s height and three times Tim’s is 8262. How tall is Tim? Carla is 3 inches taller than Tim. The product of Carla's height and three times Tim's is 8262. How tall is Tim? Carla is 3 inches shorter than Tim. The sum of Carla's height and three times Tim's is 8262. How tall is Tim? Tim is 3 inches shorter than Carla. The product of Carla's height and three times Tim's is 8262. How tall is Tim?

Assignment 2-1 Practice #1-3, 5-7, 15 Do on a separate sheet of paper. Not on the worksheet.
