The New River Valley

Med-Ride The Med-Ride Program utilizes available volunteers to transport clients in the New River Valley.  This service is available to those who have no transportation or cannot afford public transportation. It operates on a sliding scale (taking into consideration both income and expenses).

Key things clients need to know: Ineligible if covered under Medicaid Transportation Resident of the New River Valley No other means of transportation Non-Emergency Medical Transportation Complete & sign enrollment/consent forms Requests must be made five days in advance One caregiver can accompany Co-Pay between $5 to $15 Will not be refused if inability to pay co-pay

Where Does MED-RIDE GO? The scope of Med-Ride’s service is broad. Transportation is available to non-emergency health services in the New River Valley and beyond, including physician and dental appointments, free clinics ,mental health appointments, hospital outpatient services. Funding comes from local United Way Partnerships and local Foundations in the communities we serve. Toll Free – 1-888-633-7433

Volunteer Opportunities Med-Ride Travel Ambassador Veteran’s Driving Veterans

Veteran’s Driving Veteran’s Volunteer driver is a U.S. Military Veteran. Drives his own car with automobile insurance Submit to Federal background check, DMV check and ongoing training. Objective to is to reduce missed visits of Veterans. Benefit Volunteer Driver and Rider will build a relationship to encourage each other.

What does Mobility Coordination do? Helps people in meeting their non-emergency medical transportation needs while increasing their knowledge of transportation options. Assists in defraying the cost of transportation services. Reduces the risk of isolation for older adults and people with disabilities.

Medical Transportation Services How do I get to my doctors appointment? NRV Senior Services and NRV Agency on Aging provides transportation for medical appointments for persons age 60 and above in NRV. Service is also offered for persons with a sensory or physical disability. Provide transportation to the economic disadvantaged who do not have Medicaid or any other means of transportation. Enrollment Process to qualify. 5 Day in advance request required. Fees are charged on a sliding scale based on declaration of income.

Mobility Coordination also…. Empowers the client with options and resources. Explores all options to find the best fit for the client’s transportation needs. Helps people navigate the transit systems within the NRV including Virginia Breeze to Washington D.C. and the commuter Smart Bus to Roanoke. Make referrals when necessary. Keeps individuals mobile. Opportunity to educate clients on the accessibility of all transportation services in the area to assist them in sustaining/gaining independence.

Connecting in the NRV Pulaski Transit connects with Radford Transit at the Fairlawn Kroger and Wal-Mart. Pulaski Transit connects with BT and Go Anywhere Christiansburg at the NRV Mall. Go Anywhere and the BT can connect with the Virginia Breeze and The Smart Way & Smart Way Express Bus. Virginia Breeze (Virginia Tech Student Center and Christiansburg) Fares $50.00 . The Smart Way & Smart Way Express (Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center, Christiansburg Hobby Lobby, Exit-140 Park and Ride, VT Squires Student Center, Blacksburg Municipal, Exit 118 Park and Ride, VT Carilion Research Institute, Campbell Court, Hotel Roanoke/Higher Education Center, Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport). Smart Way & Express Fares are $4.00 Reg. $2.00 Reduced, Children 5 and under FREE, $120 Unlimited Monthly and $60.00 Reduced monthly.

Mobility Coordination Volunteer Travel Ambassador Duties of Position: Prepare a detailed travel guide 2 days in advance of transportation request. Use bullet format to make directions easy for client to use after ride-along has ended. Use caution and good judgment. Be familiar and knowledgeable about the bus/transit systems of the New River Valley. Understand the route the client will need to take to reach destination prior to trip. Accompany Mobility Coordination Client on public transportation to appointed destination. Be polite, kind and make casual conversation with the client. Assist clients in and out of public transportation and into medical appointment(s) as needed.
