Conservation of Energy

1. Transforming Energy- Lightbulb – electric energy to light energy and thermal energy Fuel – chemical potential energy to kinetic energy Alarm Clock – electric energy to sound Roller Skates – potential energy to kinetic energy

2. Mechanical Energy Total amount of potential and kinetic energy in a system ME is energy due to the position and motion of an object ME = potential energy + kinetic energy Total ME does not change…however the amounts of PE and KE do Examples

3. Law of Conservation of Energy Energy can not be created or destroyed; it simply changes forms The total amount of energy in the universe remains constant

4. Energy Conversions Friction converts mechanical energy to thermal energy (ex: riding a bike or skates) Mass changes to energy – nuclear fusion (sun) and nuclear fission (reactors) Body converts chemical potential energy
