Class of 2020 Presented by Student Services Junior Parent Night Class of 2020 Presented by Student Services

Topics Covered Overview of Junior Year Graduation Status Check and Recovery of Failed Classes Next Year Course Planning Plan of Action for Junior Year HOPE Scholarship Requirements Peachtree College Planning

Junior Year Overview Junior Advisement Meeting Roughly 80% of Roswell students go to a 4-year college Junior year is your college planning “exploration” year. Timeline gets tighter in Spring of junior year. Have a college list narrowed down by fall of senior year. Use college visit days and spring break for college visits. Junior Advisement Meeting http://roswellstudentservices.weebly.com

Graduation Requirements English—4 Credits Math—4 Credits Science—4 Credits Social Studies—3 Credits Health and Personal Fitness—1 Credit Personal Fitness Waiver Career Tech/Fine Arts/ Foreign Language—3 Credits Electives—4 Credits 23 credits are needed for graduation, but have to be the right ones

Course Planning for Next Year Strive for balance, but colleges do look at senior year courses Same course registration process for next year classes, during spring Special Programs Night – Feb. 21 Special processes: Online Courses – decisions may not be changed after final deadline in April Dual Enrollment – offered off campus except GT Math

Recovery of Credits for Failed Classes Retention Policy 17 credits needed to be a 12th grader Recovery Options Summer School – face to face or virtual Online Classes Credit Recovery Learning Lab Keep in mind, credit recovery is not NCAA approved Recovering a class does not make the failing grade disappear from the transcript. All class grades are on the transcript and averaged into the student’s overall Numeric Average.

What to do this year Focus on getting good grades RHS does not rank students Start researching colleges Academic Fit—Safe/Target/Reach Social Fit Financial Fit – Peachtree Financial Planning Maintain a record of extracurricular activities Remember: quality over quantity Take first SAT/ACT Express “Demonstrated Interest”

HOPE Scholarship, Zell Miller Scholarship, HOPE Grant HOPE covers a large portion of tuition for degree programs at Georgia public colleges, also awarded at private colleges but the percentage of tuition is much lower Does not cover fees, room and board etc. Zell covers 100% of tuition HOPE Grant covers a large portion of tuition for certificate/diploma programs No GPA minimum Does not cover fees

Getting the HOPE Scholarship! Must finish with a minimum 3.0 GPA in core academic courses (Eng., Math, Sci., Soc. Stud., World Lang.). Middle school grades do not count for HOPE HOPE subtracts the 7 honors points we add to Honors/AP/Dual Enrollment Then add 0.5 weight to AP/Dual Enrollment classes only (not Honors) Won’t go above a 4.0 for any class Academic electives not required for graduation still count towards HOPE GPA (examples: Spanish 3, AP Psych., etc.) Grades for all attempted academic classes included (even F’s) Getting the HOPE Scholarship!

HOPE/Zell Scholarship Continued Need a 3.7 GPA in core academic courses Need one of the following qualifying test scores: At least 1200 on SAT (Reading + Math) in one sitting Composite ACT score of at least 26 in one sitting Zell Miller Scholarship Starting with the Class of 2017, students are required to earn 4 credits in courses deemed “academically rigorous” May include, but not limited to AP courses Examples: Chemistry, Spanish 3, Algebra II Full list on gafutures.org HOPE/Zell Rigor Requirement: HOPE/Zell Scholarship Continued
